How to Update Your Training Information on the Ohio Responds Volunteer Registry
Community Emergency Response Team volunteers are required to complete an approved training every three years in order to be eligible for liability protection under Ohio Revised Code 121.404.
This Web page provides a general listing of State approved training courses. This list is not exhaustive; it contains examples of courses that fall into a variety of categories. Locally-provided training courses that fall into these categories can also be considered as approved training.
Any FEMA Independent Study Course
Such as:
- IS 22, Are You Ready? An In-depth Guide to Citizen Preparedness
- IS 230a, Fundamentals of Emergency Management
- IS-244a, Developing and Managing Volunteers

Also:
Any FEMA Classroom course taken at the Emergency Management Institute or offered by Ohio Emergency Management Agency is also approved.
In addition to the courses above, the following courses are also examples of approved training.
- Community Emergency Response Team Training
- A review of specific modules of the CERT class can be used as a refresher
- Training offered by the Ohio Department of Mental Health such as “Helping People Find Strength Following Disaster”.
- Hazardous Materials/WMD Awareness
- Basic First Aid
- CPR/AED
- Search and Rescue related courses
